Jorge Salvador is a Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra and the Coordinator of the Masters Course in Industrial Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He received his PhD in Pharmacy-Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Coimbra (1998) in collaboration with the University of York (UK) working on the field of steroid chemistry involving green pharmaceutical processes. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with Professor James Hanson at the University of Sussex (1999-2000).

His main research interests include, green pharmaceutical chemistry, design, synthesis and biological evaluation of new antitumoral compounds, mainly steroid and triterpenoid derivatives, and molecular cancer targets.

Author and co-author of over 90 publications in peer-review journals, 10 book chapters and 10 patents (two of them have been granted in US - U.S. Patents No. US 6,252,119 B1 and US 8,969,395B2).




Area of Research: 

Developments on the antitumor activity of new semisynthetic steroid and triterpenoid derivatives. The main objective of this study is to discover new leads with promising anticancer activity.
Studies on pharmacophore and structure-based drug discovery for the rational design of lead enzyme inhibitors for several cancer targets (PARP-1, 5-alpha reductase, CYP17, proteosome).
Discovery of new β-secretase inhibitors.
Discovery of new semisynthetic triterpenoid derivatives with antiprotozoal activity.
