Sónia Duarte got her first degree in Biochemistry in 2004 at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra, Portugal.
In 2008, she got a FCT PhD Fellowship to develop her PhD research with the project entitled “On the development of antitumoural therapeutic- strategies: Suicide gene therapy mediated by lipid-based systems and cancer stem cell-based vaccination”. This work was developed at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (Group of Vectors and Gene Therapy), University of Coimbra, Portugal, and at the Laboratory of CNRS (UMR 6235 CNRS) in Nice, France.
Sónia got her PhD degree in Biochemical Technology at Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra, in 2012.
Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra and was granted with a FCT Post-Doc fellowship to investigate the role of the let-7 microRNA in Machado-Joseph disease.
Her research is focused on the investigation of let-7 microRNA role in Machado-Joseph disease. The main aim is to elucidate the mechanism and develop an efficient therapy based on this microRNA to treat Machado-Joseph disease in cellular and animal models.
Sónia has published 8 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and 2 chapter books. She presented her work in 15 national and international meetings. Since 2005, Sónia has participated in 5 research projects and collaborated in the supervision of undergraduate students’ research projects.
