Rui Jorge Nobre graduated in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (2003) and then obtained his doctoral degree in Sciences and Health Technology from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the same university (2009). During his doctoral studies (2004-2009) he was trained in the IPO (Portugal) and DKFZ (Germany) with Professor de Villiers, in zur Hausen’s Lab (Nobel prize in 2008). He has 7 scientific publications, 1 scientific book, 1 patent, 1 international patent application, and more than 50 oral and poster communications. He was also involved in the detection, isolation and characterization of a novel human virus (HPV108). In 2007 Rui Nobre co-founded Infogene, a biotech company hosted at the science-based incubator “Pedro Nunes Institute” at Coimbra, being the Co-principal investigator of two research translational projects (2008-2010). In 2011, he joined the group of Vectors and Gene therapy at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC). Since then, his main research interest is to develop non-invasive gene delivery systems for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. He has been successful in getting funding from different entities. In 2012 He got financial support from FCT to start an exploratory project and recently, his research was funded by the National Ataxia Foundation (USA). Rui Nobre has been also awarded several prizes, both in science and in innovation/entrepreneurship, including the “Bluepharma's prize 2010”, for the best national PhD thesis in health sciences (2008-2010 biennium), the BES innovation award (Grand Winner, 2007) and the National Bio-entrepreneur Competition (1st place, 2006). During his degree he got also a five-year merit scholarship from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1998-2002). Since 2010 he has also supervised laboratorial rotations of graduate students from the Doctoral Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine at the CNC and co-supervised bachelor and master theses.



Area of Research: 

His main research interest is to develop non-invasive gene delivery systems for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Machado-Joseph disease/ spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (MJD/SCA3). To achieve this he has been using adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) as well as exosomes.
