Irradiation Unit
General info
The Irradiator shared resource facility provides investigators with access to a X-ray irradiator for treatment of tissue culture cells and/or mice.

Tissue culture cells and mice will be irradiated at the dose rates specified by the laboratory staff who bring samples to the irradiator. The irradiator operator will calculate the irradiation time necessary to apply a given dose. The individual laboratory is responsible for ensuring that the cells and/or animals receive the proper dosage.

The irradiator is operated Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and all samples (cell cultures or mice) that are brought to the facility will be irradiated by the Irradiator operator.

The irradiator is located in CNC UC-Biotech rodent barrier facility. All scheduling is done online where irradiator time can be reserved in 15 minute periods.
Equipment features
Biological Irradiator for Small Animal and Cell Irradiation

Radsource RS-2000 (picture below) with 0.3mm Copper filter irradiating at 160kV at 25 mA.

For Cells and other research the RS 2000 has dose rates of >5 Gy/min (500 rads/min.) filtered and up to >17 Gy/min unfiltered.

Mice are irradiated in their cage and multiple mice can be irradiated during one cycle. The RS2000 is ideal for small animal research providing a dose rate within the cage of 1.2 Gy/min and the dose distribution is better than 94% across the entire field. The irradiation of animals inside the cage allows transport and irradiation of the animals inside a filtered environment mitigating cross-contamination issues.

Specialized irradiation equipment configurations available to suit unique applications. The RS2000 is ideal for targeted tumor irradiation using spot beam collimator or custom animal shielding and offers variable dose rates to the target.
Costs
A service of 5€ for each 15 minutes of reserved irradiation time will be assessed for usage of the irradiation unit.
