Three of the 12 financed projects financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), within the call “AI 4 COVID-19: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Public Administration to reinforce the COVID-19 combat and future pandemics – 2020” are led by researchers at the University of Coimbra.

The “VIRHOSTAI” project is led by Irina de Sousa Moreira, from the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), and it will focus on the development of a innovative platform able to propose new therapies specifically designed to treat COVID-19.

In the current context, and according to the researcher “it is fundamental a faster and reliable identification of the therapeutic targets and candidates for drugs that only the best can advance to pre-clinical and clinical trials. For that, it is fundamental to maximize the use of a big volume of data generated during the world fight against the pandemic and one of the most recent advances in smart computational technologies to access and optimize the search for therapeutic solutions of hard obtaining with traditional methodologies”.

Therefore, also clarified by the researcher “by using innovative algorithms in the artificial intelligence domain, omics and biophysical data will interlink to prevent correlations and drug-target interactions associated with the virus-man, characterizing also the properties which are most relevant, as well as the biological mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2”.
