MitoXT Laboratory
MitoXT Laboratory assesses the toxicity and safety of compounds using the mitochondrial function as a highly reliable and precise biosensor. Considering the critical role that mitochondria—cell powerhouses—play in cellular metabolism, it is logical to assume that toxic molecules for this intracellular organelle can lead to cellular bioenergetic disruption and consequent organ failure. The provided toxicological tests enable a timely screening of compounds for human use, particularly important in drug discovery and development for the prevention of future complications and long-term adverse reactions. MitoXT has also assisted the validation of specific molecules or biological extracts as cellular or mitochondrial protective agents— paving the way for their therapeutic application—and characterized mitochondrial function in cells from different origins, including patients suffering from metabolic diseases and animal models.

Toxicological tests provide certified analysis of mitochondrial metabolism in situ—to preserve mitochondrial properties intact—mainly through an extracellular flux analyzer (Seahorse XFe96), one of the two pieces of this equipment type in Portugal. Currently, MitoXT is also developing alternative models and techniques to complement our toxicity testing services.
